e hope your summer was a blast, and hopefully, you got a lot of amazing footage out of your travels and adventures. Now that the season is coming to a close, it’s the perfect time to start compiling an awesome vacation video(s) to not only show off to your friends but also remind yourself of all the fun you had along the way.

Of course, no one wants to stare at an unbearably boring vacation video. That’s why we’ve put together the following tips to help you create something everyone will want to watch. But before you even begin to edit, you have to start with proper planning.

What’s the Story You Want to Tell?
First and foremost, make an outline of the scenes you want to convey. Most often, this is just chronological. At the same time, think about the tone of your video. Will it be energetic? Nostalgic? Funny? Romantic? This will ultimately affect how the video gets edited, so it’s best to have an understanding of what you want to begin with.

Think About Length
A generous attention span is hard to find. Keep your videos around 1-3 minutes, and this will significantly increase the odds of people wanting to watch.

Think About Music
Music can do a lot to transport a viewer to a different time and place. Try not to include more than one track, and aim to keep the volume consistent throughout the entire video. Also this might go without saying, but avoid voiceovers.

Organize Your Footage
If you’ve filmed a lot, start organizing and seeing all the content you’ve collected. A good method of doing things is to separate shorter clips and longer clips. This process will also help you to start imagining what the full video might look like.

Select Your Footage
When choosing which clips you’ll want to actually include, consider more candid moments versus those of scenery. Anyone can just search the internet for popular tourist spots and landmarks, but your interactions with friends and family are what make it interesting. That being said, we don’t actually have to hear what you’re talking about. Show. Don’t tell. The location will speak for itself.
